Dissertation

'Music during the English Civil War and Commonwealth periods1642-1660'

Abstract:

This dissertation outlines the impact of the decline of musical patronage in court, church and theatre, on musicians and music-making from the 1640s, exploring how the nobility and bourgeoisie to which they turned supported their art through the Interregnum. With a view to criticism of the patriarcal construct of English society, some attention is given to women’s access to music. An account of print is made with regards to its fundamental role in supporting amateur music making. Finally it is concluded that during the Interregnum, music as a commodity was aimed at a new ‘clientele’ which developed into a public market during the Restoration.
